DNB X Celeri
Collaboration project, exploring opportunities to implement daily pay into DNB´s mobile app
During my time at Celeri, the startup was part of DNB NXT accelerator program. This gave us a unique opportunity to work closely with a larger bank.
We was tasked by DNB´s representative to make a model and prototype of how our digital functionalities could be implemented into their mobile app.
We went through numerous of meetings with open banking officials, innovation specialists and The head of the UX division. We drew out many different suggestions of where this was to be implemented, specially concerning the visual hierarchy of the functionality Celeri was bringing to the table.
The key was to implement our product into DNB´s app, without being too intrusive, but also keeping some of Celeri´s identity.
After we got the green light on what, how and where, the process was fairly simple. On the Demo-day we showed the video above.
🤷♂️The problem
DNB had a problem appealing to the younger generation. Young adults often struggle with financial control, and the rationing their income till the end of the month.
🥅The goal
Making DNB an appealing bank solution for younger adults, and drawing new users/customers to bring their finances to DNB. Also helping young adults with managing their money, would help these users eliminate financial stress, and gain a steady financial ficture.
Deciding the visual Hierarchy
After numerous of meetings we decided on where and how to implement Celeri´s functionality into DNB´s existing mobile Design!
We were not allowed to put the beginning of the onboarding on the home page of the Mobile APP.
Users however can open their user account
The users will then see an option to receive daily pay and start onboarding.

Takeaway
🎓What I learned
From this project i gained a lot of insight into how it is working with a bigger firm. There are a lot of checks and balances, and many people that has to give it a thumbs up, and the process can take time. I also learned that, within a large company like this, there can be put a lot of work into something without it ever being realized.
This was a great experience, from talking meetings with innovation specialists, open banking executives and senior UX designers. There was much back and forth, and it gave thought me to be patient, deliver my best work, but most of all; it was a great challenge to balance the designs to not be to intrusive into DNB´s existing designs without being to intrusive.
💥Impact
During my younger years I, Myself also struggled with financial control. Through my studies, and a couple of years after i struggled with poor impulse control, combined with not knowing when and how many bills was coming my way the same month. During that time, it would be a gamechanger to have a tool that stopped me from buying another beer, og eating out that day.
I would say that these struggles are pretty common among younger adults, and it would provide those users with way more control, and more freedom in the long-run. This will ultimately lower less stress, and keep young adult more focused on the task they want to be excelling at in normal life.
Next step
Open banking
The foundation of this digital solution is that users get daily salary in advance, and then pay at the day when they get a salary.
One of the issues ran into was, if the money would come from a Credit company, that Celeri provided, or if this would be handled by DNB internally.
In my opinion, handling the money internally in DNB´s banking system would be preferable, so that users will not have to sign up to another credit provider.
Implement, test and iterate
Daily salary is a new way of thinking. Issues can arise, especially when taking into consideration that other financial relationships are done monthly. Bills, Rent, subscriptions and so on.
We had solutions for this, but these also had to be implemented into the design.
Then i would test a beta version. Using a group of the target audience within DNB´s customer base, and both gather qualitative, and quantitative information.
This will give us a lot of insight into what should be done, and iterate the changes, before bringing the digital product to DNB´s customers.
Personalize
Further down the line, there should be options for personalizing this feature. We have included some. We included the option to get paid every 1,2,3,4,5,6,7th day, and so on. We also added a function where they could choose to pay the daily salary to their using account, or put it into their savings account.
These are great functions, but we should do more research withing the target user group to look for more personalized settings.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for reviewing my work. This was a project i worked on during my internship at Celeri. As said before, this was a collaboration project within a DNB NXT accelerator.
